Reusable and environmentally friendly
BeeKeepa food wraps and covers are a reusable, environmentally friendly alternative to single use plastic film. We’re always looking at ways to improve our wraps and we’ve tweaked our recipe and changed up a few of the natural ingredients to bring our new improved product. Our beeswax wraps are all lovingly handmade in Melbourne using our special blend of all-natural ingredients. BeeKeepa wraps are made using 100% organic cotton, Australian beeswax, organic jojoba oil and natural resin. The ingredients used contain anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties, and it is these properties which help your food last longer when wrapped in a beeswax wrap.
Uses for Beeswax Food Wraps
The small sized beeswax wrap is useful to cover the cut end of a sweet potato, half a lemon or zucchini. It’s also perfect for wrapping the open end of a smaller block cheese and will help to keep it fresher for longer.
The medium size is a great all-rounder and handy for covering bowls, or for wrapping a salad roll, small sandwich, half an avocado, a bunch of radishes, or cut cabbage.
The large is good for larger cut veg (cauliflower, cabbage) and larger bowls – a salad bowl for example.
Tips and tricks on how to use your beeswax wraps
Beeswax wraps are malleable and easily fold to wrap and cover items. When new, the wraps tend to have an extra tackiness due to the texture created from brushing on the coating. This does diminish with use as the wrap softens.
The warmth from your hands is an important factor in ‘activating’ the wraps. You can warm the wraps by rubbing them gently between your hands. They work best when there is a good overlapping of fabric.
When wrapping a bowl for example, you may need to hold them for a few moments, applying a bit of pressure to help transfer the heat from your hands to the wrap to get it hold its shape; especially if the bowl or plate is cold.
When not to use beeswax wraps
They are not suitable for use with raw meat and fish, and it’s best to avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat (direct sun, microwave, dishwasher, hot dishes etc). Items with strong pigments (beetroot, carrots, red capsicum) may stain lighter fabric, but this won’t affect use. For more detail on care and use, please refer to our FAQ page.
Caring for your wraps
To care for your wraps, simply rinse off in cold water, or wipe down with a damp cloth. From time to time a mild detergent could be used with cold water. Then simply, dry and store flat, or rolled up in a kitchen drawer. Crinkles and creases are a normal part of the ageing process
Lifespan of your wraps
Depending on care and use, your wraps should last between 6-12 months. If the wrap feels like it’s losing its cling, it could be placed on a piece of baking paper in the sun on an especially hot day for a few minutes. They will melt if left in the sun too long, so keep an eye on them.
Extending the life of your beeswax food wraps and covers.
At the end of their lives, they can easily be refreshed using our refresher kits, which come with a small quantity of premixed blend and basic instructions.
During the warmer months, and on extreme heat days, if your wraps feel excessively sticky to the touch – just pop them in the fridge for a while. They are fine, they’ve just gotten a bit warm and need to cool down.
